Blueberry Hill is a cohousing community located just 2 miles north of Tysons Corner. The community was started in 1995 and the last home was completed in 2000. The homes are not large by McMansion standards, but the 3bedroom/2.5 baths at about 1,700 sq/ft (+ basements) is what many would consider “right-sized”. Also, the 19 homes share a “common house” with craft room, exercise area, game area and a large common kitchen where team-cooked meals happen a few times a week.
Prices in the community are reasonable – generally in the high $400′s or low $500′s. The housing arrangements and community involvement may not be for everyone, but there should be demand for this and I expect this style of living to get more popular in the future. In Northern Virginia many of us are too busy to get to know our neighbors and miss out on the great benefits of a thriving local community and neighborhood.
Blueberry Hill does have some particularities – there are no garages and no driveways for the homes. You park in a common parking lot and follow walkways to get to your home. The homes do have a main-level bedroom and bathroom (great for people with mobility problems.) The homes have many green features like geothermal heat pumps, used wet blown cellulose insulation etc.
