There is a great deal of construction in the Tysons Corner area and more projects are still in the pipeline. Due to a number of new and planned apartment and condominium buildings, the number of people living in Tysons Corner is steadily increasing. While the new Silver Line Metro (whenever it opens) may help with some of the resulting traffic issues (some question that), there are other needs that will need to fulfilled – one of them being access to grocery stores.
Just a few years ago, there really was only one major grocery store in Tysons Corner – the old Safeway off Anderson Rd (sure, you still had Trader Joes and Whole Foods down Rt 7 but I would claim those are more of the specialty store type.) That started to change not many years ago with the reconstruction of the Safeway and addition of the Harris Teeter next to Park Crest. Next came the Walmart last year (with quite an extensive food section) next to the new Spring Hill Metro. Then, this summer, we will see yet another Harris Teeter on Gallows by the rapidly developing area around the Dunn Loring/Merrifield metro.
So, what are we missing? Well, a Wegmans would be great – hence this summer rumours were circulating about a Wegmans at the intersection of Anderson Rd and Chain Bridge Road (very near Safeway.) Since then it has been very quiet.
Wegmans typically builds large stores (like the one out on Rt 29 near Dulles airport) but seems to be moving towards smaller stores as part of the mix. On top of the grocer, there apparently will be apartments or condominiums.
Per Fairfax County there is an accepted rezoning application for the site, but it has not yet been determined to be ready for circulation.
The rumored location has been fenced off and the building vacated so hopefully information will be available soon.
