At Soldsense Realty we send out our magnetic calendars every year. Apart from a useful list of holidays for the upcoming year, we also like to share an image that means something special to us. The first few years we had landscapes, then we switched to native birds and then to birds around the world.
You may or may not know this, but both of us (Liezel and Are) love taking pictures and have travelled around the world to pursue that passion. Liezel has won multiple awards and competitions with her animal pictures, has self-published two books (available at the Pimmit Library) and also had images featured in Birds & Bloom and National Geographic Explorer. Here is the story behind the image!
Lilac Breasted Roller (Mashatu camp, Botswana)
Our last trip to Africa was during the rainy season as we wanted to take pictures of birds in breeding plumage and their young ones. Most animals in Africa can hold their gestation until the rains .. Unbelievable to me … But the chance of survival of the mother and child are best after the rains as water is plentiful and not limited to water holes where the predators lurk, waiting for animals to come by.
Having just rained, insects were plentiful and these rollers were zooming around in blindingly beautiful flashes of iridescent colour. They grabbed large grasshoppers and beetles from the air and landed to eat them by throwing the insects up and about in their beaks until finally swallowing them and then flying off again to grab another tasty treat …
Here are some pictures that were shot seconds before and after the shot that was used in the calendar:
